Israël a été le premier pays non-européen à participer à l’Eurovision. Le pays peut participer car son diffuseur est un membre actif de l’Union Européenne de Radiodiffusion.
La victoire d’Israël en 1979 a été mémorable : en toute fin des votes des jurys, l’Espagne était en tête du classement avec seulement un point d’avance sur Israël. L’Espagne était également le dernier pays à voter et à donné 10 points à Israël, offrant ainsi la deuxième victoire consécutive au pays. Le titre Hallelujah est devenu un tube.
En 1998, Israël remporte un nouveau trophée grâce à la chanteuse trans Dana International ce qui fait les gros titres de la presse. Le concours connait un vif succès dans la communauté LGBTQ+. Dana International se représentera à l’Eurovision en 2011 mais échouera à se qualifier pour la finale.
